The reason I’m involved in Rotary is to give back to the community and to the international aspect of Rotary. I’ve been fortunate in life, and I want to share and to be able to give back to others. And so Rotary is an opportunity to work with adults, and be able to do something a little bit more meaningful in a community and throughout the world.
We moved to Berkshire County in 1970, and our kids became involved in 4H. We have four boys and so, being supportive parents, we became involved. In 1972, we started running our own 4H Club. And, at one point, we had as many as 35 kids on a weekly basis at our house involved in different activities.
I guess it’s all part of the Rotary model of Service Above Self. I started working with the 4H organization in getting a non-profit organization formed in 1979, because we were traveling at various locations to have a 4H Fair. And we wanted to find our own fairgrounds and develop it. So we had a donation of seven acres of land, and developed our own fairgrounds.
Through the years, we have been able to get to where we are today with the buildings and pavilions and horse rinks and bathroom facilities — all with water and electricity throughout the facility. So it’s been a fine time. The four boys are in their mid-40s today, but after they left home, I just kept staying involved. And it’s fun seeing the smiles on kids’ faces and watch them mature and grow at what they do. So that’s why I’m still involved in 4H.
